This example of the 924 GTR was delivered new from Porsche directly to Tom Winters in 1981 trough the Herman Miller Porsche Dealership in New Jersey, and was driven by himself and Bob Bergstrom, starting with an appearance at Lime Rock in 1981. Running under the banner of Whitehall Capital / Promotions they would race the car in the IMSA GTO, GTP and GTU classes over the next several years, including multiple appearances at Sebring 12hours (5x) and Daytona 24 hours (6x) . In 1984 at the 24 Hours Daytona, twenty-five years after his Formula 1 debut with Team Lotus, Innes Ireland was behind the wheel of this Porsche 924 GTR teamed up with Tom Winters & Bob Bergstrom.
Being an active race car, there were always modifications as the car passed through the seasons. In 1982 the car was modified to increase cooling to the engine, and the engine compartment sidewalls were removed. The turbo was also moved from the right to the left side of the engine compartment. In 1982/83 the IMSA rules were changed allowing a space frame, so to keep car as competitive as possible the GTR was rebuilt around a new space frame. All the original GTR mechanical components and body were hung on the new frame.
In 1986 the car was sold to Dave Pannacione who campaigned it at Daytona and Sebring. For 1987 the 924 moved to the ownership of Don Chilsen and was raced by him and Peter Dawe and Alex Tradd under the sponsorship of Creative Coachwork until 1988.
In 1989 the car was retired from racing and went into the private collection of Steve Wellings until 2011. A new owner purchased the car in 2011 and brought the car to Germany. Beginning in November 2011 and completed in April of 2012, the car received a complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration by Reiner Telkamp of Ludwigsburg, Germany. During the restoration the engine, transmission and differential were completely rebuilt. All critical parts were x-rayed. The exterior was dressed in its original 1983 livery. To address the Achilles Heel of the turbo 924, the engine cooling was modified so that both the engine block and the cylinder heads have their own dedicated cooling systems.
In 2015 the car was officially imported to Switzerland by the new owner and has since received new FIA HTP Papers valid until end of 2026. Since its restoration the 924 GTR has successfully participated at historic races two times at Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion in Laguna Seca (USA), also twice at the Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring and last but not least at Le Mans Classic in 2016. As forever a track record holder at Daytona International Speedway in GTU Class (old track), the car has a standing invitation at Classic 24 Hour at Daytona and is obviously welcomed at any prestigious event around the Globe! The car can be entered in Patrick Peter's "Classic Endurance Racing", Le Mans Classic, Oldtimer Grand-Prix and many other events.
The engine was completely rebuilt in late 2016 (the spare engine as well) - A long list of spare parts come with the car incl. a spare engine, gearbox, gears, wheels, etc...
The car is ready to race on the button - absolutely nothing to invest except new tyres !
This 924 GTR appears on multiple occasions, as one of the most campaigned cars in IMSA Racing during 1981 – 1989 in the new book by Roy Smith - "
