The history
For homologation reasons, BMW produced a small series of the 1800 TI limited to 200 units in an enhanced motorsport version and called it the 1800 TISA, with the last two letters standing for ‘special version’. The car was sold exclusively to licensed racing and sports drivers in Europe and the USA and could reach speeds of up to 192 km/h, depending on the gear ratio.
While the BMW 1800 quickly became a successful model in sales, the racing version of the 1800 TI collected sporting laurels by the dozen. In its very first year, 1964, the new BMW touring car dominated the competition at will. 14 victories in 16 races and German circuit champion. BMW also became a benchmark in endurance races and in the European Touring Car Championship. It also took first place in the 12-hour race for touring cars at the Nürburgring in 1964. An unbeaten 126.6 km/h was recorded as the fastest lap, the overall average was 120.9 km/h.
